I use this shear scraper to smooth the outsides of bowls and platters and the insides of shallow platters.
I reshape a scraper made by Doug Thompson of A-11 cryogenically treated tool steel. I round the edge that will slide on the tool rest and I shape the front edge. The steel will take a wonderful bur with a few strokes of a diamond hone. Each of my videos shows how I sharpen and use this tool. It is relatively expensive but is well worth the price.

It also includes a detailed illustration of my grain balancing techniques, which I use to get the best grain pattern I can from relatively plain wood.
